Ah, yes. The Monkey Shoulder. Crafted from the three William Grant’s Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Kininvie distilleries in Dufftown, the capital of the Speyside region, hiding behind door number three of the Drinks by the Dram Scotch Whisky Advent Calendar.
Nose: the fruity scent of very ripe Golden Delicious apples and sprouting barley that has just been poured on the malting floor, with a hint of milk chocolate
Palate: more of those nice grainy notes of that wet malting floor, accompanied by a big spoonful of heather-y honey and a spicy touch of fresh ginger root with hint of mace and… is that fennel?
Finish: Quite long, with a distinct period of milk chocolate which slowly disappears to reveal a spicy-sweet ginger and cinnamon
Conclusion: Why don’t we have more of these bottles in our whisky cabinet? They are good for sipping straight, excellent additions to cocktails (which I really have to experiment more with) and I have been told it does great over ice.
