Next in my lineup from the #SpecialReleases 2016 box we have received from Diageo Netherlands, is a no age statement Cragganmore, the only NAS in last year’s series. Matured in refill and rejuvenated ex-Bourbon casks, as well as ex-Bodega (Sherry) casks.
55.7% abv, €450
Nose: immediately, fresh green apples and the scent of fresh citrus juice enter my nose. Creamy pineapple juice and sweet vanilla, with lots of spicy cinnamon and allspice, with a whiff of freshly grated ginger and and pinch of cardamom pods.
Palate: quite spicy from the high abv, but when your palate is used to the spice, grated nutmeg, allspice and cinnamon powder go hand in hand with fruity pineapple flavours and juicy green apples. On the swallow, slight bitter cocoa beans and fresh ground coffee promise a fine finish…
Finish: medium long with again, the spicy cinnamon and allspice, with more crushed cocoa beans and a sweet, long lasting honeycomb.
Conclusion: Very nice indeed, but there is some “difficulty” to be found in an non age statement whisky for this price. She is beautiful and easily drinkable, and has a balanced spicy and fruity nose, palate and finish, but I am pretty sure I am not willing to pay the handsome amount of money they ask for one of the 4,932 bottles.
