.lagavulin – distillers edition 1990

43% abv, €65, single malt, chill filtered, caramel E150 added

Nose: again the candlewax nose, this time accompanied with a mildly roasted woodnote and smoked ham. Sweet from raisins and sultanas, and fresh, ripe stone fruits such as plums, mangos, nectarines and apricots and even fresh green apples, citrus, honey and heather can be found.
Palate: very gentle on the palate, with the taste of honey-sweet beeswax, again the sweet and ripe stone-fruits, such as apricots, nectarines and mangos. Other fresh and fruity flavors include, grapes, raisins, citrus and tangerine-zest
Finish: medium long, quite dry, with some fruits, especially raisins and a slight ash memory
Mark: +++++

Conclusion: really nice. Next time I find it somewhere, I probably will take a bottle with me. All editions are generally the same, although the vintage of the distillate and the period of double maturation will be different among the versions.

More info: this is like the standard 16yo matured in ex-Bourbon, after which it has been “double matured” in ex-Pedro Ximénez Sherry butts for three to six months. Distilled in 1990, bottled in 2006

Tasted at the distillery manager’s tour at the Lagavulin distillery, May 2013
